The flavors of Ninohe
The streets of Ninohe are dotted with farmers’ markets, each offering local produce and its own unique experience. While some people visit their favorite shop daily, others make it a point to go during what they know is the best season for certain producers.
Fureai Ninohe in the Ishikiridokoro area and Mogitate-ichi in the Kindaichi area are the closest markets to Ninohe Station. Fureai Ninohe, with freshly-picked produce filling the store, is considered the “locals’ kitchen”. Seeing the Ninohe-brand fruit and vegetables, as well as meat, miso, pickles, and grains lining the shelves gives visitors a sense of Ninohe’s agricultural abundance. Here you can enjoy authentic local culture that cannot be experienced at a standard souvenir shop.
If you are heading to Joboji-machi for its renowned lacquerware, you will find many stores offering natural ingredients along the way. At Appi-gawa, you can find freshly-picked wild vegetables and mushrooms. Kitchen Garden offers fresh vegetables grown by local farmers and regional sweets such as kyaba-mochi and mame-mochi, which have been enjoyed for centuries.
Further southwest on the border of Hachimantai City and Ninohe lies Jonan-Mama-Choku. This market, run by seven farmers from Ninohe, is a treasure trove of seasonal delicacies from the mountains. The market has its own mountains of nutrient-packed mushrooms in the fall, an impressive sight in itself.
Come to the Ninohe farmers’ markets and get inspired by the lifestyle of the locals who enjoy and cherish the seasonality of fresh ingredients.
